Every Australian child should be open to a safe and rewarding internet experience.
The Internet Industry Association (IIA) is proud to support Safer Internet Day (SID), an annual international event organised by Insafe, the European internet safety network, with participants from other countries world wide.
This year, the fifth SID takes place on 12 February 2008, with the theme 'Life online is what YOU make of IT'.
'Many people who wouldn't dream of leaving their doors or windows unlocked at home can be careless online,' Peter Coroneos, Chief Executive of the IIA, said. 'Young people often talk about losing their inhibitions when communicating on internet or by mobile phone SMS messaging.'
But the Internet is a lot less anonymous than we think. All our actions on the internet are traceable through information technology (IT).
The IIA cautions against irresponsible online behaviour ranging from online bullying and risky encounters in chat rooms to fraud when shopping online.
What can you do to get the best out of the internet and avoid the pitfalls?
1. Never give away any private information
2. Don't tell anyone anything that could help identify or locate you.
3. Protect your information by installing technical filters, anti-spyware and by using the recommended default safety settings on all your online equipment, from modem to mobile.
The IIA has developed a dedicated website on security, an initiative developed to address the issue of internet safety. http://www.security.iia.net.au/ We want to build community confidence in using the internet by promoting in all users a 'culture of security'.
Updated on a daily basis, our security site links users to a wide range of authoritative sources about safe net use.
