Monday, May 30, 2011 IIA CyberSecurity Achievements Recognised Internationally as 6 more ISPs Sign on to icode As the IIA announces six new ISPs joining its icode scheme, international plaudits continue for its groundbreaking work in advancing the cause of cyber security. In a boost to IIA's efforts to internationalise icode, IIA chief executive Peter Coroneos was recently called to a White House meeting by Obama 'cyberczar' Howard Schmidt to explore the scope for implementing the scheme in the US. "Howard Schmidt has long advocated measures such as those we've implemented here. He has previously expressed his support for our scheme, which has achieved over 90% market coverage in the 6 months since its inception - without the need for a single line of legislation," Mr Coroneos said. "Now, the President's Cybersecurity Coordinator was interested to know how the scheme was actually working and the response from customers who were notified." "More importantly", added Mr Coroneos, "he was interested to test US ISPs on their preparedness to follow suit, recognising, as we do, that global problems require coordinated global solutions." The IIA's icode defines integrated steps of early identification, notification and direction of users to remediation tools for computers thought to be infected by malicious software. The IIA's recommended resources include online tools and extend through to home visits for users lacking the technical know how to diagnose and fix infected machines. "We are out to tackle the millions of infected machines which, on a global scale contribute to almost all spam, threaten personal data privacy and challenge even national security. They are the weapon of choice for today's cybercriminal. Our aim is to reduce the pool from which they draw." "We are therefore pleased to announce today, at the start of national CyberSecurity Awareness Week, a further six Australian ISPs moving to implement the scheme for their customers. They are: iPrimus, Comcen, Minopher, Activ8me, PPS Internet and Studentnet. They join 24 market-leading ISPs already supporting the scheme. Collectively they form over nine-tenths of the Australian user base." As the latest ISPs sign on, the IIA learned that it had been nominated for an international award recognising its achievements for the Internet and the Internet industry - the "Internet Hero" award from peak UK industry body, UK ISPA. In response Mr Coroneos said, "We're honoured to have received this vindication of efforts we've undertaken in Australia, and look forward to working with our international partners and affiliates to bring to internet users worldwide the kind of protections that are now available in Australia under icode. We also thank the Australian Government for its support in backing our efforts to help make the internet a safer place". More: please visit www.icode.net.au
